* Note: Effective October 1, 2026 - per PA 26-141, Section 6 - the Registrar will issue the marriage license after a minimum of 48 hours has passed after the application.
What does this mean for the applicants/couple getting married? - This means that the couple will come in to the Town Clerk's office to apply for their marriage license on the day arranged with the Town Clerk (by appointment only) and then one or both applicant(s) will have to come back following the wait period to pick up the license in order to get married.
Use the following as a guide:
Couple comes in to apply on Monday - one or both can pick up the license on Thursday of the same week
Couple comes in to apply on Tuesday - one or both can pick up the license on Friday of the same week
Couple comes in to apply on Wednesday - one or both can pick up the license on Monday of the following week
Couple comes in to apply on Thursday - one or both can pick up the license on Monday of the following week
Couple comes in to apply on Friday - one or both can pick up the license on Monday of the following week
**No appointment is necessary to return after the 48-hour waiting period to pick up the marriage license.**

Time Limitations
Marriage License:
The license is valid for sixty-five days from the date of application.
Fee
The charge is $50.00 (cash or check made out to the Town of Monroe, CT). Should you wish to have a certified copy of your marriage license sent to you once our office receives it back from the officiator, the additional cost will be $20.00.
Where to obtain your license
If the ceremony is to be performed in Monroe, you MUST obtain your marriage license in the Monroe Town Clerk's office.
Marriage Licenses are issued from 10:00 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday thru Thursday and from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday.
