Monroe is an outstanding community of almost 19,000 residents located in eastern Fairfield County. While the town has sustained a progressive growth over the past 20 years, it has not lost its New England character and charm. Monroe is a family-oriented community with a strong local economy, an excellent school system, and a thriving Senior Center. Our parks include Great Hollow Lake, Webb Mountain, Rails to Trails bike paths, and our award-winning Wolfe Park.
Here's what Local Connecticut had to say in it's article on 16 Charming Small Towns in Connecticut:
"While the town has sustained a progressive growth over the past 20 years, it has not lost its character and charm. Monroe is a small family-oriented community with recreational facilities and a variety restaurants and shops."
Monroe's fiscal health is evident from the Town's bond rating of "AAA" (the highest possible) from S&P Global Ratings.

HISTORY
Monroe is named after James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, who served from 1817-1825. Monroe has seen many changes over the past years since it was incorporated, from being a predominantly farming community to a suburban community that maintains itself through progressive economic development.
